There are two summer reading assignments
for AP English 12:
Rising AP seniors should read these two novels and
prepare
to take a test on the second full day
of classes, August 19.
Although engaging and readable, these novels are also intricate,
experimental, and non-linear (their stories do not progress in a straight line
or in a logical manner). And they’re very new, so you won’t find SparkNotes
pages devoted to them. Therefore, take
careful notes, and annotate your books so you’ll have a way to study for the
test!

What
was Lost, |
The Way Through Doors, by Jesse Ball |
|
“A realist novel asks the reader to connect and maintains that there are ideas and people worth connecting to. What Was Lost is a good one. But throw away the jacket and beware of spoilers.” –TheLos Angeles Times “O’Flynn’s stunning, hugely original first novel was on this year’s Man Booker longlist, and it’s easy to see why—the loneliness of the characters is heartrending and the shopping centre is a character in its own right; a symbol of the age.” —The London Times |
“As long as you don't insist on a strictly literal, cause-and-effect universe, the world of this novel—which feels more like a long poem—will mesmerize you. Here, ends are beginnings. Beginnings don't end. And stories are mirrors, eternally facing each other, bouncing off each other, splitting into dozens of oddly shaped pieces, into harmless shards of magic and longing.” –The Chicago Tribune |
